Cape Town & Table Mountain

Its time to visit one of the most famous landmarks in South Africa, if not the world. Table Mountain forms the spectacular backdrop to the sprawling city of Cape Town. Raising to 3,563 feet (1086 metres) above sea level Table Mountain offers a constant attraction to casual tourists and thrill seekers alike.

You can reach the heights of Table Mountain via a multitude of walks depending upon your own table mountaincapabilities. You can even climb it if you want to take one of the tougher routes! These days however most people choose to take one of the most spectacular rides in the world to reach the top.

The Table Mountain Cableway was built in 1926 and gently transports you from the centre of Cape Town to the summit of Table Mountain. On the way up the cars rotate through 360 degrees offering you spectacular views across Table Bay and the panorama of Cape Town itself. You will also be able to see the infamous Robben Island laying off the coast. This is where Nelson Mandela spent part of his time in prison. Once it was even a leper colony! Nowadays anyone can visit it as it is a museum and a world heritage site, a reminder of South Africa’s intriguing and often controversial past.

Up through ‘the table cloth’ (the layer of cloud that often settles across the top of Table Mountain!) you disembark close to the summit of the mountain and can take in the full majesty of the Table Mountain National Park as it spreads in toward the heart of South Africa.
